Development of Ideas

The primary research we have conducted allowed us to see first hand what our audience in terms of genre types. Through the use of a questionnaire we asked a set of questions which helped us shape our opening sequence. For example, we asked, would you rather have a detailed in-depth story-line or an action-packed story-line. The majority wanted a detailed in-depth story-line. which perfectly goes hand in hand with our genre, psychological thriller. Through the use of secondary research we saw similarities with our ideas, for example, researching a thriller genre based movie allowed us to have a framework to begin with our opening sequence. The 5 different thriller movies i researched gave different overviews of the typical openings in thriller genre themed movies. Edward scissor-hands perfectly displays how a typical thriller movie starts with a eerie nature. Even though we will not use the same format as the movie we have researched, we can still use similar editing techniques to improve our opening sequence. For example, using low-angle shots to make the characters look more superior. Overall, the primary and secondary research has greatly influenced our work, because it helped mold how our movie will be portrayed. Doing this research also helped  us understand what the audience already expect in a thriller based movie, which allows us to be unique in doing the unexpected.

Our opening sequence has been tailored to excite our target audience. Most thriller genre movies use the conventional method of having death at the beginning, however we used our target audiences answers in the questionnaires and focus group to evolve these ideas. We have used elements of death to let the audience identify the thriller genre but imbued a sense of mystery, to add a bit psychological sense. We have gone with the psychological thriller, to keep our audience on their toes and in suspense. The film will be shown in a worldwide mainstream cinemas, usually past 8 PM to allow it to be only for 15+ only. It would be a blockbuster type film and cost around the region of about £80 million. Viewings would be worldwide with nearly every licensed cinema showing the film.
The different social groups within our opening sequence will reflect our regional area of filming. The regional identity of the film will be inner-city teenage oriented film. This will be in conjunction with the people would be interested in the film such as sixth-form students. However, the themes such as mental illness allow more than just 'city audiences' to connect with the film. Hopefully through the use of an Asian main character we can subvert the stereotype of a typical white male lead character, which will allow more people to relate to the film. A working class Asian character lead role will show how society has progressed to allow the minorities have a platform to entertain.

Through the use of editing, sound, mise-en-scene and camera we will convey a message through our film. Prosperity and peace only will come from progressing as a society, fear of change and modernization will only cause difficulties in our world. We do this by showing how the world would be if we reversed, in our opening sequence, showing the many possibilities life can go. The sound in our opening sequence will be used to build mystery and tension, a slow paced, eerie, non-diagetic soundtrack will let the audience sense the psychological aspect of the film. The camera angles that will be used are shots such as a tracking shots through the use of a dolly, extreme close-ups to show emotions and wide shots to reveal the characters actions. These three shots each give a different meaning such as an establishing view, emotive view and a suspense view. The use of low angles will show superiority and what is to be feared in the movie. The editing that we could use use will hugely affect the opening sequence. For example, adding fast cut scenes will keep to audience attached and add a chaotic nature to the movie. Our genre is psychological thriller which means we have a lot of space for the editing to portray the characters mind. Transitions and cut scenes will allow us to be creative with our editing, however we still need to make sure the story-line has  a realistic plot.

The mise-en-scene is broken down into 5 categories (costumes, setting, actors, lighting and props). The actor will be a student of an Asian descent which means it will not be a typical Hollywood type film. The props and costume will reflect that of a 21st century century and a teenage male. Lighting will have a huge part in the opening sequence as gloomy darkness, white and black editing will show the audience the eerie setting of the film. Even though it is a typical urban populated area, the lighting and editing will deliver a psychological thriller to an unexpected place.
