As that loneliness might be a major theme throughout the movie. This is a way for the audience to feel connected to the character by sympathizing. Sympathy for this character would be the target of the director, thus making it seem like she is the victim. She would fall into the 'Princess character' as she is shown as lonely, vulnerable and female, due to Vladimir Propp’s theory. This gives more of a reason for the Antagonist to have her as his/her victim. These factors help shape the beginning of the thriller movie as the audience already have seen the characters they would connect with.

The scene begins with old decrepit stairs following up to an vintage wooden door, from this it quickly fades to webs over old statues. This connotes the place is old and abandoned, a key location for a thriller film. It gives a sense of enigma, as no establishing shot is shown. It then shows a pair of long, big scissors, again a conventional weapon, as gives a semiotic code of death maybe. A key theme in the beginning of the movie is death. Pale white hands, symbolizing death again, this is emphasized with the pale old man’s face. This again is foreshadowing later events. Death, mystery and eeriness all factor well into the theme of thriller.

This already shows that it is based on story which is of great importance to america. The fact that it is ‘Property of the U.S. Government’ gives the audience a slight foreshadow on how secretive and mysterious the movie will be. It then begins with a man, holding a hand held camera and looking out his flat window, the weather is dark and dreary, this represents pathetic fallacy. The story starts of with an equilibrium, since there are going on with their everyday lives. This matches Todorov’s Narrative theory.
The opening scenes begins with a lot of quick takes of cutaways. This includes, a take of someone typing into their internet browser, computers, clouds going past quickly to show time. The eerie fast paced lowkey-lit scenes shows the mystery and builds suspense.These cutaways are probably things we see in present time and also sets the scene. It also gives a relate-able experience to the audience it attracts as it shows a daily bustling life in the city. The cutaways give the audience a sense of what the film is about, technology; however this does not give us a full scope of what the movie is about.
The opening sequence of cabin fever is only 2 minutes. This only includes titles, with no images. The titles appear over a white background, after more titles, the background looks very old. It may just be the wet substance from leaves in the forest, which make papers look very old. As sounds f crickets set the scene. The background becomes red and the sounds of strings increase until the title ‘Cabin Fever’ is shown. This gives the implication that there is blood involved, a generic horror/thriller convention. The use of non-diagetic sounds such as crickets establishes the setting of the scene; forest, outdoor etc. So the audience works out this is placed somewhere discrete, something is rotting and there is a lot of blood, without the help of pictures to visualize.
